Being
that modern technology has changed so drastically since the initial creation of
television, the way audiences are targeted and reached in different as well.
Looking through the lens of Spigel’s “utopian ideal”, which claims that
television is way to unify people from various social barriers, we can see how
the transformation of television has affected the audiences of programming.
Through the use of modern techniques, this sense of unity has never been more
true in both the advertisement of programming and they way things are viewed.
Looking at television as a constant form of
advertising, we can see its apparent attempt and acknowledgement of
unification. Television networks are aware that very large populations of
people around the country are watching and use phrases like “The nation will
watching!” to show the vastness of their audience, the large community that you
are a part of by liking this show, and to add pressure and incentive for you to
tune in and watch, implying that if you don’t you will be the only one that is
not up to date and be somewhat excluded from this community. Through the
various methods of viewing television programming, you no longer have to watch
at the time of the initial broadcast, it is very easy to catch up with your
favorite shows through Netlfix and other online websites, thus furthering the
idea of this utopian community that is united through these programs, being
able to relate to a common interest regardless of social status.
