The next generation of television is coming to viewers via new plot lines.
Executives of television are taking notice of the lack of creativity that is
available for audiences of the small screen. Netflix has made headlines after
their recent acquisition of the rights to “A Series of Unfortunate Events”, a
popular young adult novel series from the early 2000s. Todd Spangler explains the recent news in his
posting titled, “Netflix to Produce Original Series Based on ‘Lemony
Snicket’ Books”.
The
article gives light to the new story lines of television. No longer are the days when plots had to
simply follow a standard formula for immediate success. Consumers of the media market are craving
innovative television shows that do not necessarily conform to the sitcoms and
dramas of the past. “Broadcasters from the start did not see the viewer as a
couch potato, but as an active buyer and discriminating consumer (Caldwell 250).”
Major television studios are beginning to recognize that there are a dwindling
number of passive viewers that enjoy the simple act of watching television.
Society as a whole has become more communicative with their reviews of pop
culture and more serious issues that separate our views as a nation.
As books become another way for
television studios to explore new plot lines for their networks, a new chapter
opens up for the television experience of viewers. Books are based off of a
singular or few individuals’ minds. Therefore, there will be more creative
story lines that are portrayed in mass media for a large market of consumers.
Television can still be transforming with each passing year along with its
viewers. It is a push and pull relationship, so that television and audience
members are giving and taking creative thoughts from each other. Not to mention
that more people are likely to read the book after watching the show on
television.
