Galloway states that networks have influence over social structures and can be
influential in politics. This can be related to Mexico who is right now dealing
with a corrupt government. Mexican Television broadcaster Televisa has given
the president Enrique Peña Nieto and his soap opera star wife a 7 million
dollar luxury home. This shows the power of the network as its independent
system has a huge financial influence. To also show the influence and control
the network has is in a political system this same broadcast network has
heavily influenced the Mexican presidential election. Mexico
being a country with a low education, people are mainly informed of the news by
spending their small amount of free time watching TV, Nieto
won office by advertising in the poorest sectors of the population in an
aggressive media campaign run by Televisa. The broadcaster has a huge monopoly
in Mexico, “which controls about a 70% share of the Mexican broadcast television
market is also the principal satellite and cable TV operator in Mexico”
according to Forbes magazine. This also shows the network’s power when also
known that these advertisements were for free. Galloway says that networks can
help identify and support politics because they spread ideas and are able to
communicate to the public. With so much power and influence the power of the
television and the television broadcaster is apparent. The story also shows the
power of a centralized system. Galloway's thoughts and fears of how television work are now a reality
